All the folks on social media love to share and interact. As social media become more popular and exciting, people may be caught in a particular tradition, the modern trend of posts, reactions and sharing! The social media trend has something to do with an inclination in a particular direction of posting, a style of sharing moments with our family and friends. So the questions that come to mind are, “What’s the direction of modern social media sharing?” And, “What’s the style of publishing?”
Well, you’ll agree with me on the saying; “Expression without impression is depression”. Funny as it seems, people always want to impress without caring about the style of impression and the outcome. The fact is, sometimes when we try to impress others, we actually create seeds that germinate into self-depressions. When the sharing intended to impress goes wrong, we get depressed.
The young ones these days, my peers, love to share anything on social media just in the name of catching some fun and making names for themselves. They love to copy the lifestyle of those they see in the movies and those so-called celebrities they spot in the magazines. Dressing half-naked to expose their “vitals”. This has been the order of the day. Modern young people post nude photos and videos as a way of copying their favourite celebrities just to catch the attention of their peers.
For the modern young lady, she finds joy in making a name for herself as the first among her peers to adopt a particular western style of dressing, those portrayed by the celebrities she adores. In the days of our old folks, women respected their ‘bodies’. Women had dignity for real style. Women dressed to cover their “vital parts”. Women never exposed their breasts, butts, waist, belly and ties. That’s what we called style, yes real style. Dignified style and respect for womanhood.
What of the social media guy, the man on social media? His hair cut, the shirts he puts on, the pants he enjoys wearing, whatever he puts on and whatever he puts up. His peers call it “swag”, dressing with a modern style. Wearing pulled down pants. Putting on tightening shirts. Some love oversized shirts and pants, and they call that one swag.
In fact, to some extent possible, we can say social media sharing is set to destroy our rich culture. Social media sharing is destroying the dignity of the modern lady, yes the modern woman has destroyed her womanhood all in the name of impressing her social media friends and followers. Is this what social media was meant to be? Is this what social media is going to be?
Do we need to exchange our respect and dignity for the likes, wows, comments and shares on social media? Remember, “What goes on social media always remains there”. In the near or far future or tomorrow, what you put there today will haunt you. It will forever follow you. Somebody will use it against you. Once you post it, all in the name of impressing your friends and followers, somebody somewhere who doesn’t care about your impression will grab a hold of it, keep it and use it against you in the future.
When the time comes for you to realize your goals and aspirations, when the time comes for you to occupy that envied position (higher office) or when the time comes for you to pursue your dream ambitions, that’s when somebody who was somewhere watching and never cared about your cheap impressions will now care about you, yes they will actually use it against you.
The bottom line? Don’t allow your past to haunt your future. You deserve better than that. Before you hit the share button, pause, think and reflect! Yes, reflect on what your current action could cause you in the near or far future. Be wise, reflect before you post!
